‘Tubewells up to 100 meters in depth can be called deep tubewells and tubewells less than this depth are called shallow tubewells. When compared to other means of irrigation, the cost of irrigation from private tubewells/borings is less.

Open wells, also called dug wells, are generally made of masonry wells with large diameters and are suitable for low discharges of 1-5 litres per second. The depth of open or dug wells is generally less than 20 m, and their diameter ranges from 2 to 9 m. Their thickness ranges from 0.45 to 0.75 m depending upon the depth of the well. The yield from such types of wells is limited as such wells are dug only up to a limited depth where groundwater storage is also limited.
